Numerion Software

We are a boutique dynamics consultancy, leveraging our Carbon dynamics library to deliver cutting edge interactive and real-time simulation solutions.

While you might not have heard of us before, you most certainly have heard of our customers and the projects they work on. Our software, Carbon, is at the cutting edge of innovation in Hero Character Effects simulation and is used by VFX companies worldwide for Hero cloth and flesh simulation, including in the majority of blockbuster movies in recent years, and even some TV shows. Just to name a few: Wonder Woman, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, Peter Rabbit, It, Avengers: Infinity War, Game of Thrones, Black Sails, Star Girl.

You could say, like Ollivander providing wands for magicians, we provide the cutting edge tools that allow others to make magic happen.

In order to create truly believable virtual interactive characters, here at Numerion we believe a dynamics centric approach to character design is required. Only dynamics can deliver the micro and macro movements that are essential to bridging the uncanny valley. So, at Numerion we are building a suite of dynamics technologies, on a common platform, that work harmoniously together to deliver believable characters. These dynamics technologies include animation, skin and muscle, hair, fur, feathers, scales and clothing. We are also experimenting with next generation dynamics centric UI paradigms that will empower the artists in powerful new ways. Individually and collectively these technologies are bringing a new level of realism to virtual interactive characters on screen and in immersive AR/VR/MR experiences.

Numerion is one of the few, potentially the only company in the world today, with such an integrated technology portfolio for interactive character dynamics.

Origins

Numerion was founded in November 2009 by Mike and JC, who have been working on physics technology at Criterion Software, used internally by Electronic Arts in games such as Fight Night, FIFA, SKATE, NFS etc. on PC, Mac, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. So the Carbon technology is being developed by a team experienced in cross-platform implementation of high-performance real-time physics.

Company Name

Numerion Software came up as a fusion of NUMERical simulatION. It is also a reminder that we came from Criterion software.

Carbon Name

Carbon is chemical element with the symbol C and atomic number 6 in the Mendeleev periodic table. What's so special about Carbon is that it has molecular structures that are soft (organic) and that hard (diamond) and that reflects the nature of Carbon Physics with soft body and rigid body simulation.

So calling the core solver Carbon was quite a good choice in advertising a unified physics approach in simulation of solid and deformable objects.

Logo

The methane molecule was selected as a logo because its four hydrogen molecules are orientated at the corners of a tetrahedron.
